30 Day Challenge - Day 12

Day 25 - {a recipe} 

The recipe below is from: rachaelrayshow.com. I don't know about you, but I love to eat Sloppy Joes! I love cooking this recipe for Messy Giuseppes (like Sloppy Joes for adults), and it is super simple to boot and takes around 30 minutes to prepare which is totally considered easy-peezy-lemon-squeezy in my book! I make these for my family, okay well really only for us girls because daddy doesn't like bell peppers, but us girl's all love them...especially if you get fresh mozzeralla and parmigiano-reggianno cheese from your local grocery market to use on your guiseppes! Yum-o! Delicioso! OH BABY....they are SO GOOD! You all should try them out, and if you do try them out let me know what you think about the heavenly Italian sandwich okay!? Full credit of this recipe is given to the wonderfully talented and entertaining RACHAEL RAY whom I think is S'AWESOME!

"Messy Giuseppe"

Ingredients (what you'll need):

  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO)
  • 1 pound ground, 90 percent lean sirloin
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 5 large garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 medium portobello mushroom cap, finely chopped
  • 1/8 teaspoon (eyeball it) allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • Coarse salt and black pepper
  • 1/2 cup (a couple of glugs) red wine
  • 3/4 cup beef stock
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 14-ounce can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup (a generous handful) flat-leaf parsley, chopped
  • 4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 5-8 fresh basil leaves, about 1/4 cup, chopped
  • 1/4 cup (a small handful) grated Parmigiano Reggiano or Romano cheese
  • 4 individual ciabatta rolls or any kind of crusty hoagie rolls
  • 1 ball fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into 8 slices
Yields: 4 servings

Preparation

Preheat the broiler to high.
For the meat sauce, heat a deep skillet or a heavy-bottomed pot over medium-high heat with 2 tablespoons of EVOO, twice around the pan. Add the ground beef and cook until lightly browned, breaking up the meat with the back of a wooden spoon. Add green pepper, onion, 3/4 of the garlic, mushrooms, allspice, red pepper flakes and a little salt and pepper to the beef and cook for about 5-8 minutes.

Step  

Add the wine and cook another minute then add the beef stock, Worcestershie and tomatoes. Bring the mixture up to a bubble, reduce the heat to medium-low and gently simmer for 10 minutes. Finish it by stirring in a handful of chopped parsley.

Step  

While the meat is simmering, combine the remaining garlic with the soft butter, basil, parmesan cheese and a little salt and pepper in a mixing bowl. Split the rolls in half lengthwise without cutting all the way through and separating the halves. Press open the rolls by flattening them out a little bit. Slather the insides with the butter and place 2 slices of the mozzarella on each roll. Toast until golden brown under the broiler, about 2-3 minutes.
Top one side of the cheesy garlic rolls with a heap of meat and get prepared to get sloppy with Messy Giuseppe!

30 Day Challenge - Day 11

Day 23 -  
{a way in which I want to be remembered}
Hmmm... I want to be a woman who is remembered for being so in love with Christ that others see Him working within my life, and within me that they will want to seek to know Him more deeply than ever before...and that they will want to fall in love with Him as I have been blessed enough to have in my lifetime. I want to be remembered for being one who glimpses beauty and inspiration within each day of her life. I want to be known for being the best kindred spirit, daughter, sister, wife and a mother that any woman can be! I want to be known for being the woman who didn't just let her life pass her by...let people pass her by without being an influence likened to that of Christ...but a woman who seized every opportunity in her life with all she had! :)

Day 24 - 
{a movie no one would expect me to love...and a few more too because I couldn't choose just one

-Coraline-
 I watched this movie for the first time last Fall, and from the very first few minutes of watching it my mind, eyes, and ears were captivated to the fullest extent. Yes, sure the story line is a bit strange, but strange worked for me in this movie. You should always be careful about what you wish for...because sometimes that grass isn't always greener! Coraline was such a witty and mysterious character in her own rite...really quite an exceptionally set apart character in my eyes. Coraline is seemingly lost and hates where she is at in her life (sheesh no wonder I loved this movie because I identify with Coraline soooo much at times!) but by the end of the film she comes out much stronger and appreciates what she's been given in her life.

The score (music) in this movie is great, and I loved the art direction that this particular film took...it just impressed me so very much animation-wise and music-wise. BTW- I don't care what anyone else says about how 'meh' this film was, because I think it is excellent.....although I will say to be safe that it is not a children's movie by any means.

-The Nightmare Before Christmas-
 The first time I ever watched this movie was when I was about 9 years old. I had spent the night at my Aunt and Uncle's house. My sister and I stayed up late and watched this movie until midnight.....and when we woke up in the morning we awoke to see the ground outside covered in a thick layer of wintry snow. The movie is just so artful, the characters diverse and intriguing, and the scoring throughout the film is just brilliant! If you haven't looked up the 'Jack & Sally Montage' by Vitamin String Quartet on I-tunes yet you totally should! ;-)

-Godzilla: Final Wars-
I watched this film with my boyfriend a while back and surprisingly I was actually pretty into it! If you haven't noticed by now I am kind of a 'Chic Geek' and Jared (my bf) is an 'Uber Geek!' Jared has introduced me to the world of Marvel Comics, DC (Detective Comics), Toho and Godzilla, and so far I am not disliking any of it except the awful rubber monster/creature suits that the actors wear in the Godzilla films. The characters and story-line I can appreciate, but the suits seem silly, and truth be told it's harder for me to take the monsters seriously sometimes when they are stumbling around in rubber suits...aren't they supposed to be menacing? lol

For some reason, whether we like monster movies like Godzilla or not, we all like the subject matter of Good vs. Evil...Defender of Earth vs. Feared Foe. The story line in this film really surprised me, quite a bit actually. I mean I was sitting there watching a man in a weird Godzilla suit, while listening to the English dubbed version of a Japanese film, and I was still impressed by the sheer brilliant story telling abilities of the genre and of this particular Godzilla film, which to be honest for me says a lot! I amazingly got over the rubber suits thing fairly quick, and the poor dubbing job and saw the movie for what it was: awesome monster-fied Good vs. Evil story telling at it's best! Also...Godzilla: Final Wars had Mothra in it and so far she is my favorite Godzilla franchise character! Jared....I bet you are really proud of me right now! Hehe! :-P

Day 21 -
{Something I know I do differently than most people}
Okay, so something I know that I definitely do differently than most people is how I take my socks off. Yep, I'm talking about sock removal off said gal's feet! lol Most people would probably just take them off with their hands real quickly without thinking about it, but I use my big toes to take off my socks and when I am done my socks are wrapped within one another in a nice little ball. This is just one of my habits/quirks that I do the way I do though, because I have many of them to go around believe you me. :-P

30 Day Challenge - Day 9

Day 18 - {a time when I felt passionate and alive}
Valentine's Day weekend this year would have to be the time when I felt most passionate and alive. I was visiting my boyfriend, Jared, for V-Day weekend this year and it started snowing while we were out with his family. We got back to the house and J and I sat in the living room watching the snow fall down from the darkening sky. Then Jared (my bf), Seth (bf's brother) and I decided to go have some fun outdoors...the snow was still falling and we all started running around wildly and we had a snow-ball fight, and then Jared and I made beautiful snow seraphs on the freshly snow covered ground that night. Plus knowing that it was snowing while I was with my bf on V-Day weekend, and that I wasn't going to have to celebrate the holiday as just another singles awareness day really brightened my spirit...and the snow and being with Jared made me feel alive, with passionate love blooming in my life! *Jared also wrote me a poem for V-Day!* :-)

Day 19- {a talent of mine}

I have been playing the piano since I was 6 years old.......that means that I've been pounding the keys away for 15 years now so far! I love playing the piano as much as I love teaching piano. Music, especially playing the piano (and singing too) is an outlet for me...something that sets my heart and soul alight and at ease. At first I took piano lessons because I wanted to be like my best friend who was taking lessons, and then slowly but surely playing piano became 'my thing.' After many years of lessons and hard work at learning how to play and advance into an adult level I felt the need to convey to my teacher that I would one day like to teach lessons myself...and the rest is history because now I am a piano teacher myself!

My other talents include: writing poetry and singing.

Day 20 - {a hobby of mine}
Quilting. I started this lovely blue and yellow Around The World quilt quite a few years back.....and I only recently finished it a few months ago. I pieced the quilt top together on my Janome sewing machine, and after I sandwiched  the batting, backing fabric and the quilt top together I quilted all 1,000 plus 2x2 inch squares by hand around the edges......it's called echo stitching/quilting. I look forward to finishing a few more of my current quilting projects that are laying in bins currently awaiting my crafty hands to call upon them!

I also like to scrapbook, cook, garden, knit, make wee folk...etc.

A Circle of Influence

I thought I'd share just a few random thoughts that have been on my mind lately. Namely, being purposed and influencing others in our lives, so that they may see Him within us.


We all have a personal circle of influence whether we be sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, wives, husbands, employed, unemployed, collegiate students or students of life. We all have been purposed by the Lord, even though at times we may feel as though we inspire no one, and have seemingly not made a difference in the world daily when we go about our everyday, sometimes seemingly hum-drum lives. I am here to tell you that we all have a purpose...and we all have a circle of brothers and sisters to influence daily (believer's in Christ and non-believer's alike.)


Recently my momma and I were talking about one of my friend's recent blog entries in which she said I don't feel like I have much purpose some days. Immediately after reading my friend's blog entry I thought to myself "Gosh, Sarah, you feel the exact same way some days! You know you have a purposed life set forth by the King, but you fail to acknowledge it at times. You want to wallow in self pity sometimes....saying and believing that I feel 'so not purposed and tuned in' and like I don't really know who I am." Some days I feel the same way that my friend felt. I feel out of tune with what my purpose is in life.....with knowing who I am and if I really make a difference...mere little me. And if I don't know who I am, then how exactly am I supposed to influence others to Christ? 


There are those days when I feel as though time just keeps on passing me by and I haven't grown like I should've or that I haven't really made a difference at all, or even found out completely who I am yet in life. I struggle to see my purpose daily, and to understand who exactly I am really here on Earth to influence some days. I know there has to be a purpose, because God knitted me together in my mother's womb...so I know that I was purposed long ago, even when I fail to see it (purpose) within myself. Instead of searching to see what I can do, who I can influence in my life, I should let the Lord work through me and see who we can influence together!


I may not know who I will influence tomorrow, next week or even next year. I may not understand why the Lord has me where He does, currently stationed in my life, but I know that every moment is purposed.....every moment...they might be just what let's others glimpse Christ through me and my seemingly mundane life. It could be a smile shown, a kind word spoken, or even a good deed that goes without need of a thank you. God works in the small mundane things in life....while we are at work....while we are walking along the street....even while we are in Wal-Mart. 

Let Him work through you to influence your circle of people nearest you....and just maybe we'd begin to see that our seemingly drab boring everyday life can, and will, be used to His glory!
 
So how do we begin to find our purpose? I find that the best place to find purpose and peace from all emotional stress and feeling a lack of purpose is in the Word, in prayer and in a quiet moment with God. How do you get focused and recharged so that you can stand purposed and influence others in your daily life?

Here is a challenge that I am going to strive to live out daily, and I want you too as well. Look around you, trying to glimpse those people whom the Lord has placed you around daily in life and try to see Jesus' face within your circle.

P.S. Here's one more thought...think about Abraham in the Bible when He asks the Lord if He could find but only 10 righteous people, would the Lord then spare the city of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genisis 18:16-33).  If Abraham had just spent his time pouring into the lives of his family (his close circle of influence)...just his family mind you... the city of Sodom and Gomorrah might have been saved. Our reach should strive to exceed that of only the circle of influence which is our relatives and close ones, but it's a great place to start...so then we can launch our influential righteous selves into the world wholeheartedly!

30 Day Challenge - Day 8

Day 15 - {a person I admire}
My dearest, my momma. Franziska. She is my humoresque partner in acts of uberously insane hilarity that cause bouts of uncontrollable laughter. She is my enigma....my polar opposite at times, and just as often she and I are the same, yet not. She is my constant friend, care-taker, emotional anchor, soul rejuvenator, confidant, smile-causer....my everything! I love you momma!

Day 16 - {a song that makes me cry}
There aren't any songs that make me cry....at least not yet anyway. I am a pretty emotional person, when driven towards it, so I find it funny that I cannot think of one song that makes me cry! :-P

I love Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. I love the swirling movement, the various shades of ochre and blue wrought throughout the lovely painting. I want to have this portrait hanging in my Home one day....it will match my yellow and blue quilt that I made and my polish pottery splendidly!

30 Day Challenge - Day 7

I was really excited about writing this post, and I had it all typed out nicely and awesomely too I might add...then my computer froze! *Urgh-a-dee-burgh-a-dee!* So this is as good a replication as any that I could come up with, again, for the awesome entry that I had written. Most people see me as a homebody who can at times get restless, wanting to get out of the house for a couple of hours, but really I am ready to go somewhere....hike through Europe...see all 50 states of America, etc. Surprised to hear that I long to hit the road, to walk the earth in distant lands, to go exploring.....because this young lady longs for adventure in her life lemme tell you! I am the young adventurous idealist woman after all, although I am sure it comes as a shock to most of you. I hope you enjoy reading about what vacations I'd like to take...since I couldn't just pick one! Feel free to share about your thoughts on my picks. I'd love to hear about your vacation picks too ya know! ;-)




Day 14 - {a vacation I'd like to take}

I would love to go back to Germany again, but this time instead of being a 10 year old girl, first time overseas away from her momma and daddy, and homesick as all get out the whole two weeks I was there, I will be a strong adventurous young woman ready to take on the world! I think I am more well prepared now as a young woman to go back...and certainly I'd be a lot more appreciative! I'd like to explore castles, visit Cologne, ride trains along the Rhine, sit in various bakeries eating delightful treats while sipping nice warm coffee and writing to no end on notebook paper...and I want to hike until I drop!

Another vacation I'd love to take would be going to Scotland and Ireland. My family heritage is partially Irish, and there's some Scotman's in mah blud too I think so I am interested in seeing where my forefathers roamed a bit. I'd love to experience it and drink it in...oh Ireland and Scotland! I don't need anything fancy honestly, just give me a little room, my hiking boots, my camera, a notebook and pen and a loch or two and I'd be set! Honestly, what would be more fun than sitting by the waters of Loch Ness awaiting to see a glimpse of the beastie? *Funny thing is you all probably think I'm kidding about Nessie! Lol!*

30 Day Challenge - Day 6

Day 13 - {a guilty pleasure}


Starbucks milk chocolate covered coffee beans are my guilty pleasure. The first time I ever had this guilty pleasure was when I found a box of them at Wal-Mart on the candy aisle......later that night I ate them while watching Twilight......and the movie and the guilty pleasure was great! I am really sad because none of the stores in my town carry these wonderful beans of chocolate covered bliss anymore *drooling while reminiscing.* If I was going to list a non-food non-guilty pleasure that I love to indulge in it would definitely have to be long walks in the mountains with my boyfriend, Jared.

30 Day Challenge - Day 5

Day 12 - {a song that I want played at my wedding}

"When you say you love me the world goes still....." *Sigh* I *heart* this love song, by my favorite male vocalist of all time, Josh Groban. I've wanted this song played at my wedding for as long as I can remember....well, at least since the first time I ever heard this song played before! 

I hope you enjoy listening to When You Say You Love Me. I wish I had more words to share with you about how this song makes me feel at the moment, but I simply cannot think of any more words. The only thing I can think of is this: It's such a beautiful song and I pray that the man I marry one day will love me as deeply as the moving loving depths of these lyrics.

30 Day Challenge - Day 4

Day 8 -  (switched up a little)  
{a favorite word of mine, or two? :) }
Penultimate....is one of my favorite words. Penultimate means: next to the last, and it is a quite frequented go-to word for myself. I just *heart* the word!  I don't think too many people use words like penultimate anymore, but I know that I am one of those few people who uses brobdingnagian words like it daily. 

Day 9 - {A photo I took}


I absolutely adore autumn weather! I love to embrace all of the feelings that the cold crisp air brings, and of course the gorgeous burstings of colour that are displayed on nature's canvas are lovely...crimson, orange, and ochre. I am ready for Autumn! 

Day 10 - (switched up a little)

This photo was taken in September of last year. We were on a family day trip, and my sister took this shot of me...my hair is pulled back in twists on the side and a pony in the back. I am wearing a lace-ish cream colored shirt that has a neo-victorian flair to it. Gotta love those aviators too! :)

30 Day Challenge - Day 3

Day 5 - {a favorite quote}

These lines from Auguries of Innocence by William Blake speak to me of inspiration that is seen in and through things such as nature, people and time...even things so tiny as a grain of sand...and that beauty can be seen within everything and everyone if we care to glimpse long and hard enough.

Day 6 - {a moment I wish I could re-live}
This April I went on a beach trip, as a chaperone with Jared's (my boyfriend) church. We arrived at the beach late at night and some of us went down to the water before we bunked away for the night. As we reached the edge of the sand, we walked steadily forward as a group towards the ocean. Then the rest of the group left to walk on the boardwalk and then it was just Jared and I on the beach. Jared and I walked along the edge of the water, hand in hand under the stars while talking and listening to the sounds of slowly breaking waves upon shore. That for me will always be remembered...how simple the time was, and how intricate every detail that was heard, seen and smelled has stayed with me....hopefully the memory never fades. It was beautiful!

30 Day Challenge - Day 2

Day 2- {a favorite movie}

I used to listen to the old audio tapes of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'The Phantom of the Opera' Broadway production when I was little (and I imagined that I was the beautiful ballet dancer and soprano singer Christine Daae), and when the film by Joel Schumacher finally came out I didn't hesitate to beg to go see this movie in theaters. Phantom is definitely my favorite movie...it is a period piece, a French love story...and so much more to me...it just takes my breath away every time I watch it! It's a musical too which always gains points in my book.

Day 3 - {a favorite book}

I am absolutely enamored with the writings of Madeleine L'Engle. Her writing is sheer brilliance, and she is by far my favorite author. My favorite story of hers though is 'A Wrinkle In Time.' I've read 'wrinkle' a few times and I've listened to the audio cds many times. This book embodied 'me' as a middle schooler. I was Meg Murray...awkward, quiet, feeling unattractive and in search of love. This book just simply screams love!

Day 4 - {a favorite tv show}

 
I have watched almost every episode of every season of Survivor since it began, and I am really excited to see what Season 21 of Survivor holds for us in Nicaragua. This Fall cannot come soon enough, for one because I love autumnal weather and two because that means Survivor night is back on on Thursday's!

30 Day Challenge - Day 1

Day 1 - {a favorite song}

I listened to this song a lot when I was first talking to my now boyfriend, Jared, through our e-mails back and forth. There is just something that captivates me while listening to this song...something I cannot completely wrap my mind around...but I think about Jared whenever I hear this song...and now it's our song. I absolutely love the band Anberlin...have for many years now. Actually one of the first few times I had seen Jared at camp last Summer I was wearing my Anberlin shirt...that won over major points for myself with J and he thought I was very interesting because of my band t-shirt choice. This is also one of Jared's favorite songs too...he'd been listening to this song all those months that I had also been listening to it which we had spent e-mailing back and forth to one another.

The 30 Day Challenge (Hopefully done in less than 30 days!)

So I know that I have been away from my blog for a little over a week now, shame on me....but oh my goodness it feels great to have the keyboard under my fingertips once again while typing away! I haven't written anything on here since the 'Modesty' blog entry...which I think turned out pretty well....thank you all for all of the lovely comments! My blog also had WELL over 200 hits after posting on modesty! Please, feel free to keep those comments coming! :)

I have been very busy with my work....visiting my boyfriend this past weekend....and now my cousins are here for the week so there won't be much time for me to blog between work and entertaining of my cousins in the evenings. I figure since I've seen quite a few other girls do the 30 day challenge on their blogs, and I'd thought it was cool I'd do it! Modesty: A Maiden & Knight's Perspective

Hey there! I've wanted to talk about modesty (and fashion too) for some time now, and I thought I'd finally get around to doing it now rather than later. I've really enjoyed hearing from all of you, or not hearing from you 'comment-wise' per se, but seeing my visitor number counter skyrocket up over the last past week or two. 

Since I've started writing about the tougher topics, and gotten so many comments and visitors it has really filled my heart with hope, faith and joy!  Honestly I didn't know how the blogging world (my readers, to be more exact) would take to my having written about Courting and Pre-marital Sex of all things recently.....from what I have heard though the entries have been inspiring and eye opening for you all.

I had high hopes for the Lord to begin to speak into your lives and to use this blog, through my writings, to His great glory! I want to see young people (of both genders) strive to please him in their faith, families, friendships, dating/courting relationships and in their every day lives. I want to see Jesus reflected in the hearts and faces of us all....and that my friends is why I feel so compelled to write about the tougher topics that Christians, and non-Christians alike, face and battle with every day...but don't want to talk about.

Okay....so....modesty...right... I do think that being modest is hottest. I also believe that there's a lot of power that a woman holds in her dress and attitude towards modesty...and this includes using her body as a canvas to voice her heart. For me dressing in a more modest manner has always been in my genetic makeup. I don't know why I've always been hyper-aware of what is appropriate and inappropriate....for the most part, that is...of what to wear, but I just always seemingly have.

Modesty, for me, is not just about throwing a large baggy burlap sack over my head, and calling it a day, so that I won't cause any 'primal males' (sorry guys, this phrase is not my own, I've heard it from you guys) to drool over me and my body. Modesty is so much more than my clothing choices alone...it's also about a 'heart thing' for me too! 

For my wardrobe I love to wear earthy colors, rich purples, and shades of brown. I love wearing batik printed fabric dresses and shirts. I love to wear skirts of all shapes colors and lengths, well I do now at least. Rolled up jeans that double as capris are also a favorite staple of mine. Wearing hoodies, jeans, a tee 'n' sneakers are a fave outfit of mine, and also wearing very different interesting eye catching necklaces and cool rings are fashionably 'my thing.' You don't have to dress like a nun to be modest, honestly! 

I am NOT the most fashion conscious young woman out there....yeah, I said it. I typically wear prints, colors and styles that are within the realm of being uberously comfy and not so much 'fashionable' or 'trendy'. I wear what is simply 'modestly me!' lol 

So onto an introduction of the co-writer of this particular blog entry, an then onto a guy's and girl's perspective Q&A of modesty shall we?


I would love to introduce you to my beau, Jared Fisher (pictured above.) You can find Jared's writings at his blog: This Red Thread. (Leave Jared a few comments to spur him on...perhaps he'd write more often if he had some encouragement and a few more followers on his blog. Hehe!) Jared has graciously agreed to work with me (his chock-full of ideas, scatterbrained, heart-filled and purposefully-wanting-young-women-and-men-to-seek-Christ-daily, girlfriend) from time to time when I write about certain topics on my blog that need a guy and girl perspective on things.

I think that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to modesty. There are two sides to the story of modesty...and perhaps modesty isn't just all about the girl, maybe it's about the guy too....just a random thought of mine. I believe that modesty is not just about what clothes we wear on our outer selves, but also it is about what clothes our inner selves....our hearts need to be modest as well! With all of that said, and Jared's introduction being taken care of let's get this convo rolling!

Below are a few questions which I have asked Jared about on the topic of modesty, and a few that he had for me too:

(Sarah:) Q-So I've always believed that modesty is not just about what you wear, but it also about how you carry yourself as a person...about what kind of words come out of your mouth and about how well you guard your heart and your fellow brother's in Christ's hearts too. What are your thoughts and views on this....and on what the definition of modesty really is?

(Jared:) A- I think you nailed it, really. Modesty isn't a clothing line, its a way of life, you have to choose it and work with it.

(Sarah:) Q- Is modesty just a 'girl thing' or do guys have a 'modest code' or something that they follow too?

(Jared:) A-  It is more cast as a girl thing, mainly due to the fact that women in Western society have more 'forbidden fruit' than men do. That does not mean that guys have nothing to do. No matter how cool it is, guys shouldn't walk around with baggy pants and droopy drawers. If you are to the girls liking, (and you never know when you are, trust me) then you will be pretty much violated by their eyes, and surveys show most girls prefer a mans bottom half to the top (that doesn't seem to apply in Taylor Lautners case, though ;-) ). If women can't, then we can't either, so please pull up your pants. It's my opinion that droopy drawers are a police tactic to make gangsters easier to catch.


(Sarah:) Q- I wore a bathing suit to a car wash last Summer, and I had a tank top underneath my tankini, but after washing all of those cars I got grease all over me....so I went and took the undershirt out from underneath my swimsuit....which obviously was a HUGE mistake! I never had a second thought when I looked in the mirror in the bathroom to see if it was okay on me or not. I had thought my top was fine, and then I ended up with a guys eyes stuck on my chest and not on my eyes later because of what I was wearing...his eyes and mind were affected that was for sure! For guys is it about how tight the clothing is on a young woman, is it about how low cut/high cut what a girl is wearing is that affects you all, or is it about both that is too revealing and causes young men to falter and to leer at young women?

(Jared:) A- BOTH. For a guy, anything revealing is treated with the same regard. So long as the shape can be seen, its fair game. In truth, girls really ought to rethink what they wear for swimming, because its really no more garment than lingerie in most cases. You wouldn't show any guy THAT, now would you. You can still have fun, just try to remember that guys are very keen with their eyes.


(Sarah:) Q- I've heard that layering a tank top over an undershirt (which has ample coverage) is totally appropriate, but what is a guy's vantage point on when a young woman wears just two flimsy low cut tank tops one over the other....and let's say her bra straps were showing by accident out from underneath her low-cut flimsy tanks? How does this make young men react....what do they think of when they see young women dressed like that? What about long necklaces being draped around girl's necks that are worn over a low scoop necked shirt.....does this have any effect whatsoever *I've always wondered this*?

(Jared:) A-I see nothing wrong with the approach as long as care is taken to not show anything. If the cut is low, typically guys will get more than an eyeful (think about the fact that the fashion industry for women was built in the olden days by men, not women.) So take some care and don't let the boys drool like that over you. Let's just say that the saying 'men are wolves' has more than an inkling of truth to it, (though wolves are actually matriarchal  ;) ) The necklace, well, you know what a peacock is, and how they operate? Flashy jewelry is easily turned into a way to display 'plumage' in that the flashy bold colors contrast with the area around it and draw the eyes of potential suitors. Now, depending on what you are wearing, this can be just 'meh' or it can be a grave modesty disaster. Like I said earlier, what can be seen will be.


(Sarah:) Q- Do you think that the way a young woman wears her makeup, can also at times, be immodest? 

(Jared:) A- Makeup. . . I'm not all that enthralled by it myself, but yes, it can certainly cause more problems than it solves. It comes more down to the behavior itself, the makeup can sort of serve as an extra charge in a guys mind. Overdoing the 'sexy' look can be a deadly weapon when coupled with 'sexy' behavior. This isn't true in all guys minds, but it is best to be cautious. You know you've found a good guy when he thinks you look nice enough without makeup, just to make the note.

(Sarah:) Q- Do you think flirtation plays any role in immodesty whatsoever?

(Jared:) A- Flirtation, YES. It is easily one of the biggest aspects of immodesty when a person flirts and teases, it only serves to build up a guys hopes, usually for little satisfaction. Girls, if you wan't attention, don't do this if you know what's good for you. Guys don't just give you attention, when you become really flirty and they're interested, its because they're pretty much undressing you with their eyes. Sorry to crush any dreams, but its true.

(Jared:) Q- Now, guys can certainly do the same. A lot of guys will flex a little more and bulk up around women just for the attention, would you consider this immodest, Sarah?

(Sarah:) A- Yes, I definitely would consider flexing and strutting around immodest. Again it's all about the attitude, for guys and girls, which says whether they are modest or not, but I think it's more so about the strutting about and dying for that ego boost, which is fluffed by the ladies, that the guys struggle with more than the clothes like us young women do. 

Guys flirt, in my opinion, just as viciously as the girls. Guys are more 'visually primal' so I think that when a girl flirts with a guy....dresses inappropriately to get attention...it is more noticeable to everyone around them, but guys do it too. You guys will flex your muscles in front of us, say certain things to us to try to get us interested in you when you are only 'testing the waters' with us, send us text messages late at night, and pick us up and throw us over your shoulder...which is immodest behavior! Guys and girls are BOTH guilty of flirtation.

(Sarah:) Q- How can young women tame their immodest actions and dress so that it will help young men stay on the path of purity of mind and heart?

(Jared:) A- Dress is a pretty practical part of it, and not the most important aspect. How a girl acts is key. If you act like you care about how you look, and that you don't want to give guys a little more to look at then their primal minds need, then how you dress will become second nature. Now, with how you dress. . . if you assume that it just might cause a problem, then don't wear it. Guys will often take any chance they can to steal a glance, at anything, so it's best to be wary. Now don't go wearing medieval armor or anything, but just be wary that whatever you can see, they will too.

(Jared:) Q- To reverse this, how can a guy work at that to keep the girls from wanting to see a little too much?

(Sarah:) A- For me I think, and most girls too, low loose or really tight jeans/pants draw attention to certain areas on guys, boxers showing and hanging out is about as distracting to a young woman as a bra strap hanging out to a young man, and guys wearing no shirts, at times, are BIG distractions to us females! 


(Sarah:) Q- What makes a young man see a young woman as a modest young woman of God exactly? Is it her dress, speech, makeup, knowledge and love for the Word of the Lord? What specifics do you see within young women that makes them the most modest and attractive in young men's eyes, as well as your own?

(Jared:) A- It really just comes down to character. Looks work fine, but if a person shows that they really do think the way they do and act it out in their lives, it shows. Modesty is about acting modest. Now don't think you have to crank the level of stodginess up to eleven and become a prissy character that allows no people close that aren't modest enough or genuine enough, that's just as bad as acting trashy. The key is genuine respect, for yourself, for the Lord, and for the guys.



(Sarah:) Q- Modesty is also about beauty too; inner beauty for the most part I think. How do you think guys and girls can both work on their inner 'beauty' and 'handsomeness' to glorify God and protect their brother and sister's hearts?

(Jared:) A- Inner beauty comes from confidence, which can be tricky when younger. Confidence in self most often has to come from someone else, but trust me, it doesn't have to. You simply have to believe in yourself and think 'I am just fine the way I am' and it will start from there. You can start dressing less gaudily and start being wise in thinking how people see you. Do you want people to see you, or just your 'assets?' Without modesty, you are only going to get one, and you know which one it is.

(Sarah:) Q- So you are saying essentially that our self worth and self image should be found within the confidence that is gained by seeing ourselves as an image of Christ then? ~Genesis 1:27~

(Jared:) A- It sounds hard to do, but yes. All it takes is that little step, the willingness to admit it and believe it, and it will grow from there. And girls, men love women that have confidence, and I'm sure it goes both ways. I didn't say 'boys' because boys, younger than men emotionally and often physically, are not wise in the ways of relationships, often cockily going about dating as though all girls are in the palm of their hands. Never been cool to be sleazy, so far as I've seen.

At the end of the day I think both young men and women know how to act, speak and dress appropriately...to some extent...and if you don't then I hope our blog post has opened up your eyes a bit to the 'delicate power of modesty'. We (girls) may not always think about what really makes a young man struggle, because it might just seem cute, fashionable and "in" to us, but we should strive to guard our brothers' eyes and hearts at ALL COST. 

I know I sure didn't know what a guys thoughts were on modesty, having grown up in a house full of only girls. I don't have any brothers to ask all of the questions that I wish I could have. Luckily, the Lord has always blessed me with wanting so desperately to be a pure young woman, even when at times I wasn't sure of how to do so exactly. I've managed....and it's been a blessing in my life to be living as a young woman who is empowered by modesty.

Here's a gauge, if you struggle with knowing what is right or wrong:

We've always got that little voice whispering in our ears telling us "...whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy- think about such things. ~Phil. 4:8" Oh yeah, and that little voice....it's called the Holy Spirit...and I'm so glad He's been there to whisper into my ears and heart my whole life about what is right and pure and admirable to the Lord, modesty-wise and in all things otherwise! :)

.....and just to show you that you can be a young woman who is MODEST here are some photos of myself wearing what I feel is pleasing to the Lord, fashionable, and is also appropriate for my fellow Christian brothers to see me wearing daily.



'The Neo-Victorian' look. I am wearing a grey-blue shirt from Rue21 that has lace on the one shoulder, an Old Navy denim skirt (that I bought at a Goodwill store for $3) and some 'grey dancer heels' (that were on sale, from Sears.)


'Green, with a side of grace....no envy.' I am wearing a long blue denim skirt (not pictured that I got at Goodwill for $3), a long green v-neck tee (from Maurices), a knitted cream over-shoulder sweater (from Maurices), and a long brown 'n' cream beaded necklace (gift from a friend.)

'Lumber-Jill!' I am wearing a pair of artist ae jeans that are rolled up into 3/4 length style capris, leather caramel colored boots from Germany (left by my cousin), and a flowy plaid tank top (from Maurices) with a taut cream undershirt underneath (also from Maurices.) The great thing about this undershirt is that when/if you lean over 'nothing spills out' because it is taut! If ya know what I mean! ;)


The pink mum ring on my right hand, middle finger, was a 21st b-day gift momma n daddy got me from Etsy.....'Sweet & Simple Jewelry Design.'


I hope Jared and I have debunked a few modesty mysteries for you, and that we perhaps have made you think about your clothing choices, so that by dressing modestly, both you young men and women will guard one another's eyes and hearts...and please the Lord all the while through your dress, speech and actions.
